Periscope - Live or Synchronous Platform

Periscope – Live or Synchronous Platform

Assignment objectives:

Find a live or synchronous platform that is in use online and list out it’s properties (ideal number of users, capabilities, types of interaction). What do you think it was designed for, what use? What is it actually used for? Does the use match the capabilities? What are the successes or problems in it’s design or use? – Prepare to show and discuss in class

I decided to go with Periscope for this assignment. Periscope is a mobile application that allows you to share your stories through live streaming. In order to use it you need to have a Twitter account. Their own description in apple app store goes like this:

“Periscope lets you broadcast live video to the world. Going live will instantly notify your followers who can join, comment and send you hearts in real time. The more hearts you get, the higher they flutter on the screen.”

I used the app both as a streamer and as a viewer. This app has a wide range of varieties that it is used. I used it as a vloging tool (sharing a moment of your life that is not specifically important). I really like how you can interact with your viewers by responding to their comments.

The downside to this application is, it is hard to navigate through so many live streams and find a good one to view amongst them.
